The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts welcomed 160 new students during the school’s annual matriculation ceremony held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, in the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium located on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.
The ceremony recognized students’ accomplishments, reinforced their commitment to LSMSA and encouraged them to apply the necessary diligence to persevere until reaching commencement.
“In this ceremony, we celebrate accomplishment that has brought you to this place and this privilege that you now have as a student of LSMSA,” said Dr. Steve Horton, executive director.
According to Horton, 18 students joined the class of 2017, 53 the class of 2018 and 89 the class of 2019.
“Over the past year, 491 students entered the application process, 298 had the ability to complete it and you 160 demonstrated that you had the ability to succeed at LSMSA,” said Horton. “Over 80 percent came to us with a grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0. Your composite ACT is 25. You come from 35 of Louisiana’s parishes and several of you are a child of an LSMSA graduate.”
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gabbi Blanchard, a junior from Houma. Milan Arpino, a senior from Monroe, sang the National Anthem. Varun Amin, a senior from Lake Charles, spoke about the student pledge. Claire Leming, a senior from St. Francisville, and Sydney McCollough, a junior from Mansfield, offered closing remarks. Kathy Barrios, a junior from Houma, sang the LSMSA Alma Mater.
“I would like to welcome and congratulate matriculating students on their decision to attend LSMSA,” said Amin, president of the Student Government Organization.
“When you sign that paper, you not only agree to take on the academic rigor, you also agree to become a part of the LSMSA family and strive to maintain its positive living and learning environment.
“The integrity of this community depends on its students and their principles.”
