Trey Gordon exhibit "Dethrone" featured at LSMSA's Sharon Turcan Gahagan Gallery through October 30

LSMSA's Sharon Turcan Gahagan Gallery has opened a new visual arts exhibit, Dethrone, by multidisciplinary artist Trey Gordon, which will be on display now through Thursday, Oct. 30.
On Thursday, Oct. 30, the gallery will host a closing reception with the artist from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

According to Trey Gordon, the focus of his work has shifted from exploring personal thoughts and feelings to portraying people empowering themselves and others.

“The faces you see here are people I have come to know and trust,” he said. “We bonded over our shared traumas and differences and decided to move past them and take our crowns/peace of mind back. For us, the crowns represent power, intimidation, skill, and tenacity. Owning them puts a target on your back—they’re easily stolen. This body of work is meant to show my friends, the places in a world we love, and our connection as crown bearers. P.S. Wear your crown and hold your head high. You never know who wants to dethrone you or disturb your peace. Protect it with your life and everything will be alright.”

Trey Gordon is a multidisciplinary artist and aspiring muralist who seeks to give back to his community through public art and creative collaboration. Based in Monroe, Louisiana, he has painted murals across the state and is part of the Black Creatives Circle. Through his work, Trey tells stories of people, both known and unknown to him; the physical and digital places they inhabit; the characters they see themselves as; and their perspectives on the world. His bold use of color reflects his upbringing and experiences as a queer man in the South. Trey has exhibited his work throughout Louisiana and other states and is currently planning a mural for the Love Like Ashley Project in West Monroe.

The Sharon Turcan Gahagan Gallery is located on the first floor of LSMSA's Center for Performance & Technology (CPT), just west of LSMSA's High School Building at 715 University Parkway in Natchitoches. Standard hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information or to schedule a visit contact Chris King, Principal Lecturer of Art, at cking@lsmsa.edu.
