Local businessman speaks at annual MLK program

These were the words of advice from Natchitoches businessman J.W. Scarborough to students at LSMSA during the school’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. program held Thursday, Jan 18, in Treen Auditorium.

“Some changes need to be made in Washington, D.C.,” said Scarborough. “The way for those changes to be made is for young people like you to get involved.”

He also encouraged everybody to vote in all elections in his or her area.

“You first want to search the person’s record to see if this is the right person you want to vote for to help your community,” said Scarborough. “Do not just take what somebody says, because they can polish it up and make it look good and lead you in the wrong direction.

“You have a mind of y our own, you are in good health and you can think for yourself. Remember what I say – stay involved, educate yourself and motivate yourself.”

The program began with a welcome and words from Dr. Steve Horton, executive director at LSMSA.

“For 34 years, LSMSA has celebrated the accomplishments of this American icon, not just because of his work toward uniting blacks and whites, but more of a celebration for freedom and liberty for all of us,” he said. “He continues to be remembered as one of the most influential and inspirational African-American leaders in United States history.”

Adreanna Queen, a member of the Black Student Association that sponsored the event, was tasked with the assignment of finding a speaker for the program.

“As we begin to embark on our paths to adulthood, we need to be reminded that no matter how young or old we are, we have voices and we are able to get involved within our community,” said Queen, a senior from Natchitoches. “I want us to get a glimpse into someone’s life who was and remains to be dedicated to civil rights for themselves as well as other people.”
