Kate Lowry, PhD

Kate Lowry ('06) is the Strategy Director for the Science Philanthropy Alliance, a nonprofit that advances scientific discovery through visionary philanthropy. 
Kate is trained as an interdisciplinary earth system scientist and oceanographer, with extensive experience conducting fieldwork and satellite remote sensing in the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica, and the Pacific. She is an author of nearly 30 scientific articles, including in the journal Science. Her research has been recognized with a NASA Group Achievement Award, a Stanford University Scholarly/Academic Achievement Award in Earth System Science, an NSF Antarctic Service Medal, and a U.S. Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal.

Kate serves on Advisory Committees for the National Academies Climate Crossroads and the NSF Office of International Science & Engineering. Building on her passion for science education, mentoring, and outreach, she also serves on the National Leadership Council for the Society for Science and the nonprofit board of Proyecto Itzaes. Kate pursued her education at Stanford University, receiving her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Earth Systems and Ph.D. in Environmental Earth System Science. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
