Dancers receive instruction from fall guest artist, Steve Rooks

Steve Rooks, Professor of Dance at Vassar College and Resident Choreographer for the repertory company, came to the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) as the Fall Dance Guest Artist, courtesy of the Louisiana School’s Praecellemus Fund.
Professor Rooks is also a former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Rooks led a Graham Technique masterclass with the LSMSA dancers and set two original works, "Mind Heist" and “Soweto.” These pieces will be performed in the fall informal dance concert as well as the spring dance concert.

Gifts to the Praecellemus Fund make it possible for the Louisiana School to host guest artists, in this case, allowing dance students to receive training and mentorship from top professional choreographers currently working in the field of dance.

“Guest artists expose students to different perspectives and movement styles than my own,” said Associate Lecturer of Dance Crystal Lewis. “These experiences help broaden the scope of their dance experiences and training. It also gives students the opportunity to network with working professionals and college professors, opening those lines of communication for when they leave LSMSA.”
