LSMSA Continues to Rank Among America's Best High Schools
The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) has once again received top rankings for the fifth year in a row, according to Niche’s 2019 Best Public High Schools in America list. Additionally, the school’s teachers were again listed among the Top 10 best faculties out of 19,147 public schools in the country.
“LSMSA's unique curricular offerings are not comparable to the typical high school in that all expected learning outcomes meet or exceed undergraduate-level courses,” said said Executive Director Steve Horton.
Through articulation agreements with schools in the University of Louisiana system, students have the opportunity to earn up to 74 hours of college credit for their LSMSA courses as well as pursue an associate’s degree while enrolled at LSMSA. Additionally, a robust Memorandum of Understanding with Northwestern State University gives students access to more than 80 courses that qualify for dual enrollment.
“We are grateful and humbled to be recognized by Niche annually for the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and student body,” added Dr. Horton. “The LSMSA living/learning experience is one-of-a-kind, and we're proud to be recognized throughout the country.”
Niche’s annual K-12 rankings are based on a rigorous analysis of dozens of statistical factors and millions of reviews from students and parents. Along with the rankings, Niche also releases report cards, which assign letter grades to more than 100,000 K-12 schools and districts across America on topics like academics, college readiness and teachers.
“Obviously, LSMSA has had a huge impact on my life,” said Michael Sumner ('07), assistant director of enrollment services. “People never believe me, but when I first started as a student, I was quiet and shy. A big part of coming out of my shell was this school; the students and the faculty. Having the chance to work here years later has been a unique joy, because I can see first hand how much of themselves everyone who works here puts into the school. The amount of time faculty and staff spend at ball games, performances, and recitals is unparalleled, and it's really a mark of their passion for this place. I'm glad that is seen in the school's rankings, and I think our faculty and the school are very deserving of the accomplishment.”
LSMSA earned an ‘A’ grade in academics, teachers, clubs and activities, administration, diversity, college prep, health and safety, and resources and facilities.
Currently, LSMSA is the only state-funded residential high school that specializes in nurturing the academic excellence of some of Louisiana’s top sophomores, juniors, and seniors. With the competitive nature of admission into the school, students from all over the state actively seek out acceptance into the program.
