Model United Nations Club participates in Model UN Conference

This is the first Model UN event that any LSMSA student has attended.
Seven students in the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts’s (LSMSA) Model United Nations (MUN) club competed in the state-wide YMCA Model UN Conference in Baton Rouge. The event took place on Feb. 7-9 and was the first MUN event that any LSMSA student has attended.
Steely Forrester (’20), Anna Sloan (’20), Athena Cai (’20), Anna Cattar (’21), Lucy Silverman (’21), Caleb Tynes (’20) and Max Hopcraft (’20), alongside students from all across the state, took part in international debates centered around the global prison crisis, child labor laws, and more. Subsequently, they wrote resolutions to combat the discussed issues, with six of the resolutions passing within their respective committees.
“One of the resolutions established a procedure in response to a mock global epidemic,” said club sponsor and Lecturer of English Dr. Jocelyn Donlon. “Another created a free, online college sponsored by the United Nations.”
During the trip, Cai was elected as presiding officer for the club’s General Assembly. Cai will carry their duties in next year’s conference.
The trip was made possible by the LSMSA Foundation, who assisted in financing a portion of the trip, and also by club sponsors Donlon, Associate Lecturer of History Dr. Kelly Lankford and Steely Forrester’s father, Alan Forrester.

LSMSA has more than 50 student clubs and organizations and is currently accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. To apply, visit
