Micah Luftig, PhD, Treasurer
Dr. Micah Luftig ('94) is currently an Associate Professor in the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Department at the Duke University School of Medicine where he runs a research lab studying viruses and cancer.
Micah is an alumnus of the LSMSA class of 1994 and happily married to Nikoma Thompson, class of 1995. They have four young boys and live in Durham, North Carolina. LSMSA was a critical part of his career path, as he was able to get a foothold in microbiology research by performing independent studies with Steve Nelson and running the LSMSA microbiology lab during his senior year. After LSMSA, Micah received a BS at LSU in Microbiology and Math and a PhD at Harvard Medical School in Virology. After postdoctoral training at a Merck Research Lab site in Rome, Italy, Micah and Nikoma returned to the States and have been in Durham since 2007.
Micah and Nikoma’s time at LSMSA was a transformative experience and, in part, inspired them to home school their boys for several years upon moving to Durham in a similar living-learning environment to what they experienced in Natchitoches. In the past, Micah has served as the Treasurer of the LSMSA Alumni Association (1998-2000) and has visited the school to discuss careers in basic science research (2002). Micah and Nikoma also visit every opportunity they get and have dropped in to see their old professors on occasion over the years. LSMSA has a very special place in their hearts and Micah cherishes the opportunity to serve on the Foundation Board to continue to provide such a unique experience to the current and future generations of Louisiana’s brightest and most creative students.
