Kate Lowry, PhD

Dr. Kate Lowry ('06) is the strategy director at the Science Philanthropy Alliance, a non-profit organization with the mission to increase philanthropic support for basic science research.
Trained as an ocean and earth scientist, Kate conducted research as a postdoctoral scholar from 2016 to 2018 at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. She completed her graduate and undergraduate education at Stanford University, receiving her PhD in Environmental Earth System Science and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Earth Systems. Her oceanographic research focused on polar marine ecosystems has resulted in over 25 scientific publications to date. She has conducted fieldwork during nine expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica, and the Pacific Ocean, spending nearly a year at sea aboard icebreaker research vessels.
 
Kate grew up in Slidell, Louisiana, and graduated from LSMSA in 2006, where she discovered her passion for scientific research during a summer internship at NASA Ames Research Center that led her to compete as a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. Kate has been recognized as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and with a NASA Group Achievement Award. In addition to serving on the board of trustees for the LSMSA Foundation, Kate is a mentor for the Peninsula College Fund. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
