Nondiscrimination

Non-discrimination Policy
Approved by LSMSA Board of Directors Monday, June 15, 2020

The Board of Directors of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) states that LSMSA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age in its education programs and activities. Any person who believes he or she has been subjected to discrimination may file a grievance.

Examples of the types of discrimination that are covered under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) include sexual harassment; the failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics; discrimination in a school’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and programs; employment discrimination, and discrimination based on pregnancy. The Title IX regulations are enforced by Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and are in the Code of Federal Regulations at 34 CFR Part 106. Title IX prohibits retaliation for filing a complaint or for advocating for a right protected by Title IX.

Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination and is explicitly prohibited, whether such conduct occurs on or off campus during or after school hours during or directly related to school-sponsored activities, or at a time and/or place directly related to school functions or an employee’s school-related duties.

As a local educational agency, LSMSA elects and adopts the U. S. Department of Education, OCR Title IX rules and procedures for investigating and handling reports and complaints by a student involving sexual harassment as defined in the Title IX rules including a grievance procedure as appropriate for a secondary school. The procedures shall be used regardless of any complaint filed with or an investigation has been instituted by any law enforcement agency.

If you feel your rights as a student, employee, or candidate for admission have been violated, regarding Title IX, you may contact the U. S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) or to LSMSA’s Title IX Coordinator.
