Chemistry class plays Battleship with periodic tables
Students review electron configurations
Students enrolled in chemistry recitation at LSMSA played Battleship with periodic tables to review electron configurations during class on Thursday, Oct. 5. According to Dr. Michele Stover, instructor, in order to attack their opponent, students had to give the corresponding electron configuration for the element. The opponent confirmed the attack by giving the name of the element. “Electron configurations can be a difficult concept for some students as it is not a topic that is taught in the lab setting,” said Stover. “Students have to learn how to visualize electrons which are too small to be studied experimentally. This is important because the various shells and orbitals the electrons exist in determine the chemical and physical properties of that element.”
Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) is the preeminent state-supported residential high school with competitive admissions for Louisiana's high-achieving, highly-motivated sophomores, juniors, and seniors. As a public school, there is no tuition to attend, and assistance from the LSMSA Foundation ensures the program is available to all qualifying students regardless of family financial need.
