Shallow attends national summer institute

Rising senior spends time on Princeton campus
Marcus Shallow is more than half way through his seven weeks at the Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute sponsored by the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America and held on the campus of Princeton University.

“At the leadership institute I have engaged in intense academic discussion and debate regarding current social issues in America,” said Shallow, a rising senior from Elton at LSMSA. “I have attended discussion-based classes and college-level argumentative writing classes headed by professors from highly selective colleges and universities from across the nation.”

The LEDA program has also provided academic counselors to help in the guidance of senior year and transitioning to a college that suits Shallow’s preferences.

“I am thoroughly enjoying my stay on the campus of Princeton University and being surrounded with like-minded individuals willing to share their past experiences and future aspirations,” he said. “The sense of community that is being developed here, both in and out of class, is truly phenomenal.

“I am looking forward to continuing to enrich my world perspective during my time here and returning to LSMSA with a renewed vigor for education and equality.”

This program includes leadership training, academic writing instruction, standardized test preparation, college guidance and community building. The Summer Institute provides participants with a unique range of learning experiences that help them develop and sharpen their problem-solving skills and open the door to reaching their potential as students and leaders.

LEDA is a national, not-for-profit organization dedicated to identifying and developing the academic and leadership potential of exceptional public high school students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.
