Fourteen receive awards at banquet

Local coach speaks to student athletes
Fourteen student athletes received awards during the annual Athletics Banquet held Friday, May 12, in the gym at LSMSA.

“We are here to recognize our student athletes for their hard work and dedication,” said Dale Clingerman, coordinator of athletics and recreation at LSMSA. “The students worked very hard, not only in their sports, but also in their academics.

“We would like to take this time to recognize them and appreciate everything they have done.”

The guest speaker was Micah Coleman, head boys basketball coach at Natchitoches Central High School.

Six seniors were presented with the Scholar Athlete Award. They were Claire Leming of St. Francisville, Corey King of Hammond, Varun Amin of Lake Charles, Stephen Watson of Baton Rouge, Lindsay Michelle of Plaquemine and Kabir Shah of Natchitoches.

Awards for the boys’ basketball team included Stephen Watson, Hustle Award; Charles Chapman, a senior from Haughton, Most Improved Player; Steven Harris, a junior from Natchitoches, Offensive Player of the Year; and Ludwig Colimon, a senior from Lake Charles, Team Manager of the Year.

Girls’ basketball award recipients were MyChel Robinson, a senior from Mansura, Most Improved Player; DJ Picolo, a senior from Destrehan, Tenacity and Spirit Award; and Samantha Hernandez, a junior from Slidell, Offensive Player of the Year.

Volleyball recognition included Stephen Watson receiving the Most Valuable Player Award, Lindsay Michele receiving the Most Valuable Player Award and Claire Leming receiving the Tenacity and Spirit Award.

Soccer recognized Kabir Shah and Varun Amin with the Team Leader Award.
Madie Weakley, a senior from Metairie, received the first-year senior Impact Player of the Year Award.

Stephen Watson and Kiara Padilla, a junior from Fort Polk, were recognized as Most Valuable Players for SLAMT.

Athlete of the Year was Stephen Watson.

Claire Leming received the highest honor given to an LSMSA athlete, the Eagle Sports Hall of Fame Award. This award recognizes “a commitment to hard work, sportsmanship and family.”
