Students, instructors attend American Chemical Society meeting

Attendees network, talk with industry professionals
Four students and two instructors attended the 72nd annual Southwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Galveston, Texas, Nov. 10-13.

“We attended the meeting to allow our students to get a feel for what frontier research looks like and to network,” said Dr. Stephen Costin, associate lecturer of chemistry. “The students had an opportunity to talk to representatives from universities and industry professionals as well as undergraduate and graduate students.”

Those attending included Kerry Doyle, a junior from Eros; Ruby Kharod, a junior from Opelousas; Gabby Yoes-Favrot, a senior from Gonzales; Elizabeth Long, a senior from Natchitoches; and Dr. Michele Stover, lecturer of chemistry.

The meeting featured presentations, poster sessions, an exposition, receptions and an educator’s day with a wide variety of symposia topics chosen from analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, polymer chemistry and much more.

"Dr. Stover and I were able to see some of the work being done in the field of chemical education,” said Costin.  “We hope that the trip will lead to future collaborations and research opportunities for our students.”

The event was hosted by the American Chemical Society Greater Houston Section.
