School welcomes prospective students to campus

Ninety-four prospective students representing 29 parishes visited LSMSA Nov. 12
Exploration Day is held twice yearly and is designed to give an overview of the academic, social and residential life programs that LSMSA offers. The winter Exploration Day will be held on Monday, Jan. 16.

Prospective students were welcomed to campus by members of the Office of Enrollment Services, faculty and staff, administration and student ambassadors.

“Exploration Day gives those considering attending LSMSA a chance to have a look at the campus and the way things work on campus,” said Alyssa Bosworth, a sophomore from Houma. “There were so many people on campus, and they all looked so eager to be here.”

Class demonstrations available for students to sit in on included “Opportunities for Participation/Performance in the LSMSA Music Department,” “Animation with HTMLS,” “The Greek and Latin Roots of English,” “Pericles and Athenian Democracy,” “Introduction to Global Literature: Life’s Great Questions and Literature’s Attempts to Answer Them,” “The Spring of 1945 and the End of an Era,” “Who is Christopher Columbus and Why is He Wrong?” “Erasing Your Way to Creative Writing,” “Modeling the Zombie Apocalypse,” “Dynamic Systems – Deep Zooms into the Mandelbrot Set,” “Examples of Collaborative Learning and Peer Teaching in AP Calculus,” “Mystery Bones,” “Changing Times – How to Modify the Rate of a Clock,” “Ghostly Images, Spinning People, Rainbows, Lightning, Anti-Gravity Earth and Electric Peanuts,” “Seeing Data – Making Maps” and “Jazz Dance and Being part of the Dance Ensemble.”

While students attended two class demonstrations, parents met the directors and learned more about what it means to have a student at LSMSA. This included hearing about academic programs and how the school supports their child academically from Dr. Kristi Key, director of academic services; how the school supports their child residentially from Emily Shumate, director of student services; how to apply to become a student at LSMSA from John Birch, director of enrollment services; and how to pay their bill and how much it costs to attend LSMSA from John Allen, director of finance and operations.

Student ambassadors led tours of the academic campus.

Visitors also had an opportunity to eat in the cafeteria and visit with faculty members from each of the academic departments – Creative and Performing Arts, Math and Computer Science, Humanities and Foreign Languages, and Science.
