Interact Club hosts ACT workshop for local students

Members of the Interact Club at LSMSA sponsored a free ACT workshop for area high school students on Saturday, Nov. 5.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide free advice and tips about how to improve ACT scores.

“We wanted to help local students achieve a higher score on college acceptance standardized tests,” said Gwyneth Engeron, a member of the club and a senior from Houma. “It was intended more for students with lower standardized test scores wishing to work harder for a higher score.”

Club members offered sessions in math, science, reading, English and writing in order to review the types of questions students could expect on a standardized test. Several test questions were looked at and broken apart.

“Even though not nearly as many students showed up that had signed up, the workshop was a success in that we were able to give individual attention to the students and give them more confidence in themselves that they can get the higher score,” said Engeron. “They needed to see that they were smarter than they were giving themselves credit for, and that is why I believe the workshop was a success.”

The Interact Club is a service club that volunteers as often as possible. Members work with the community to facilitate food bank management, play bingo with senior citizens and keep the city beautiful through regular road and park cleanups. The group also works with the Rotary Club annually to package and donate dictionaries to more than 600 elementary students throughout the parish.

The club emphasizes student-led initiatives, in which students come up with ideas to solve problems within the community.

Students helping with the workshop include Sofia Rivera, a junior from Covington; Grace Dumdaw, a senior from Mandeville; Milan Arpino, a senior from Monroe; Kerry Doyle, a junior from Eros; Ian Sager, a senior from Geismar; Karly Brown, a senior from Baton Rouge; Gwyneth Engeron, a senior from Houma; Matthew Olivier, a senior from Abbeville; Reagan Craig, a junior from DeRidder; Abigail LeBlanc, a sophomore from Forcoche; Nautica Jones, a junior from St. Martinville; and Jacob Burton, a junior from Houma.
