"I wanted to gain new experiences and be able to work in a place where I felt like I belonged."
Why did you choose to attend LSMSA?

I chose to attend LSMSA in my sophomore year because I felt like I was not getting a challenge at my old school. I also wanted to gain new experiences and be able to work in a place where I felt like I belonged.

Was your family supportive of your decision?

My mother was very supportive of the situation. My father not so much, but when he read more about the school, both decided it would be a good change for me. Within a month, I was ready to begin my journey at LSMSA.

What do you like most about being a student at LSMSA?

The thing I love most about being a student is here is that you are able to explore your interests and strengths more than at other schools. For example, I am a writer and performer and being here I was able to take creative writing three times, voice class, private voice and beginning acting. Taking those classes helped me to decide exactly what I want to go to college for next year. That is what I love most about being a student.

What do you know now that y ou wish you had known when you first became a student?

I wish I would have known that it is okay to ask people for help and use your extensions for class. When I first came, I was so scared to talk to my teachers, and it caused a lot of problems for me. I struggled and then when I finally went to teachers for help, everything began making sense. I also learned that if I have to use extensions for classes, it is okay. The teacher won’t judge me and it will help me get a better job done. I also learned to take risks. There is only one high school in my state that will ever be able to give me these opportunities, and I can’t waste them.

What do you like most about living in the residence hall?

I love the neighborly atmosphere it has. How helpful people are (both students and SLAs) is great and very welcoming. I am suiting with people I have known for almost three years now, and we get together and hang out. It is just such a great vibe.

How did you learn about LSMSA?

The school actually mailed me a letter saying how I had been nominated by a teacher at my school and that I would be a great candidate. They told me to apply, and tada, here I am!

What is your favorite subject and/or class?

That is a tie. My favorite subjects are probably the two I am hoping to go into, which are performing arts and creative writing. Both allow me to have an outlet and express what I am feeling in ways different from most.

Who is your favorite instructor?

That is a toughie. I do not know if I actually have a favorite teacher specifically because I like a good bit of teachers equally. If I actually had to choose, I would have to say Dr. Emily Allen and Lisa Benner for helping me get to where I am in my singing and writing. That is only if I absolutely had to choose, though. I really don’t have favorite teachers.

What advice do you have for new students?

My advice for new students: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Teachers and academic peer mentors are your greatest resources. Take chances and try new things (reasonably).
