Students learn about HOSA

Two representatives from the state chapter of HOSA spoke to students at LSMSA on Friday, Sept. 16, during the Science Speaker Series presented by the Department of Science.
Brittney Bradford, Louisiana state program specialist, and Brooke Voorhies, Louisiana state program assistant, explained what HOSA is and what benefits it offers students who are involved with the organization.

HOSA is an international student organization that provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation and recognition exclusively for middle school, secondary, post-secondary and collegiate students interested in a health career.

Louisiana HOSA hosts yearly conferences.

The first conference is the fall forum held in October. It focuses on learning about HOSA, the development of leadership abilities and career perspectives.

The annual state leadership conference, held in March, allows members to attend numerous workshops and an opportunity to compete in some of the 57 events offered. Every member is urged to compete in at least one event.

Members who qualify in the competitive events at the state leadership conference have the opportunity to compete at the international leadership conference. Members from all over the world meet at the international conference to compete and meet other students in HOSA.

Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown steadily reaching more than 165,000 members through 48 chartered HOSA state associations, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Italy and approximately 3,600 secondary and postsecondary/collegiate chapters.
