Alumni raise money to help LSMSA families impacted by flooding

More than 200 donors raised nearly $38,000 through the LSMSA Foundation to provide support to students impacted by the flooding in South Louisiana.
“These dollars have already helped the school to immediately purchase supplies and clothing for many students,” said Katja Thomakos, executive director of the LSMSA Foundation. “They will be used for ongoing support such as counseling expenses, LSMSA fee support, bus fare and other critical needs for our students impacted by these floods.”

Parents of both current and former students took to social media in an effort to help those in need by offering rides to LSMSA, picking up supplies and the offering of emotional support.

Alumni mobilized and worked tirelessly all weekend to clear out and demo the homes of three alumni before mold set in. Work crews were quickly formed and included those doing manual labor, child care, food prep and supply runs. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of these alumni, three homes have been saved.

“We often refer to the LSMSA Alumni Association as a family,” said Jamie Smith, president of the Alumni Association. “The horrible and vast impact of this flood has shown how much these alumni care for each other.

“Words can’t describe how appreciative everyone is for the assistance they are receiving in a time of need. This effort speaks directly toward our association’s mission of promoting and serving their lifelong relationship with the school.”

There will be more opportunities to volunteer and work on other homes over the coming weeks. Anyone interested in participating should join the LSMSA 2016/BR/Acadiana Recovery Facebook group.
