Two compete in national debate tourney

Two members of the Class of 2016 from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts attended the National Speech and Debate Tournament hosted by the National Speech and Debate Association in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June.

Danni Yang, of Alexandria, competed in the event of United States Extemporaneous Speaking, and Timothy Shertzer, of Pineville, competed in Congressional Debate: Senate.

“While neither of us made it past the preliminary rounds of these events, we held our own against much larger teams with extensive coaching and preparation resources,” said Shertzer.

Both Yang and Shertzer competed in the supplemental event of extemporaneous debate, a fast-paced, limited-preparation debate event focused on current events. Shertzer won six of eight rounds, ranking him in the national Top 55 in the event. He also received an award on the national stage for being a four-time qualifier to the national tournament. Yang also competed in the consolation event of impromptu speaking.

Yang graduated in the state Top 50 out of nearly 400 students, earning the National Speech and Debate Association’s Degree of Superior Distinction. Shertzer graduated first in the state and 30th in the nation out of more than 73,000 member students, earning the Association’s Degree of Premier Distinction.

The National Speech and Debate Tournament is annually the largest academic competition in the world, attracting more than, 7,000 students, parents and coaches from more than 1,000 schools throughout the 50 states. In order to qualify to the tournament, a student must rank in the top two of their district qualifying tournament, with Louisiana being its own district.

In the fall, Shertzer will attend Columbia University and Yang will attend the University of Texas at Dallas.
