Students attending LSMSA have opportunities to study and perform in a wide variety of Arts disciplines. They include:

MUSIC - Students may audition to take private lessons in piano, voice, or most instruments. For those with no prior training, entry-level classes are offered in voice and piano. Students can also take Music Theory and Composition. LSMSA vocalists have many opportunities to perform in Chorale (a classical choir) as well as in solo performances and a number of state and regional competitions. Advanced pianists and instrumentalists can also prepare solo recitals and participate in state and regional competitions. Instrumentalists can audition for the LSMSA Wind or Chamber Ensembles, and some even perform with ensembles at Northwestern State University, including the Natchitoches/Northwestern Symphony.

DANCE - Dance course offerings include beginning through advanced levels of Ballet, Modern and Jazz techniques. Course offerings also include Intro to Dance, Dance Improvisation, Dance Composition and Dance History on a rotational basis. The LSMSA Dance Ensemble, the student dance company, is open by audition only. The Dance Ensemble produces an informal fall concert as well as an annual spring dance concert.

THEATRE - Students may take classes in Acting I or II and Stagecraft, and have opportunities to work in Speech and Musical Theatre. A popular interdisciplinary course is Studies in Dramatic Text and Performance. The primary acting ensemble is the Theatre Repertory Company, which presents a major production each semester.

VISUAL ARTS - Entry-level classes for budding artists include Drawing and Design. For more advanced students, we have specialized courses in Painting, Watercolor, Printmaking, Ceramics, and Sculpture. Student work is exhibited regularly throughout the school and each year, some of the top work becomes part of the school's permanent collection.

CREATIVE WRITING - This is our newest offering under the Arts umbrella. Students have opportunities to study Poetry, Fiction, Drama, and Literary Non-Fiction. Submission for publication is a requirement in all Creative Writing courses.

  • ART103 CL Exploring Visual Arts

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Introduces students to a variety of art materials and techniques while learning the basic elements and principles of art and design. The gateway course to the Visual Arts Curriculum. A $25 lab fee is required. (Formerly AR103)
  • ART206 CL Printmaking I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Provides students a series of projects introducing them to the craft of fine art printmaking by creating portfolio quality pieces while developing a vocabulary of their own artistic ideas.   • ART210 CL Contemporary Art

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). This semester long course explores the global perspective on the interaction between contemporary art and culture as well as why individuals should study and examine art generally. It also allows the student to learn common art terms while providing the opportunity to analyze and interpret work using the language associated with art critique. Individuals will view historic and contemporary examples of how concept and design is used in a variety or art forms, focusing on pieces that push the boundaries of convention and have had a real effect on society.   • ART234 CL Ceramics I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Intended for students who have a basic understanding of the elements and principles of design and would like to study ceramics for the first time. A comprehensive introduction to the craft of clay working, with the primary emphasis on studio work leading to a portfolio of finished pieces by the end of the semester. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART244 CL Sculpture I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Students will learn the basic skills of three-dimensional design through the use of a variety of materials and techniques. Students will be introduced to a variety of historic and contemporary sculptors while discussing the strategies of a variety of artists. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART250 CL Drawing & Painting I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Develops skills in the production of art, applying the fundamental elements and principles of fine art and design. Students will produce a body of work that shows personal exploration, artistic philosophy, art criticism, and art history. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART253 CL Photography I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). An introductory study in the field of digital photography and the photographic processes. Students will continue to explore photography through a variety of projects while pursing advanced skills in printing and using photo editing software. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART255 CL Design I

  • ART260 CL Architecture I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Designed to give students an understanding of residential functional and aesthetic design. The course revolves around designing a vacation home for a particular family on a specific lot and information related to that design. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART270 CL Digital Media I

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Introduces students to digital video and sound elements of art-making. Students will explore the use of digital media through a series of projects using graphic, video, and sound editing software. Students will be given the opportunity to produce a series of short films while viewing a variety of historic and contemporary film samples. A $25 lab fee is required.   • ART306 CL Printmaking II

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Continues the development of the skills taught in Printmaking I. In addition to demonstration and technical assignments, students will view historic and contemporary examples of quality prints and will analyze, and discuss specific artworks, identify cultural sources, processes, and the role of printmaking artists.   • ART403 CL Adv Visual Arts

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). For students who have already completed ART103 and an additional Visual Arts course and would now like the freedom to create a series (3-5 pieces) of work based on their own theme.   • DANC144 CL Dance Improvisation

    (One semester, 0.5 unit credit). An introduction to dance improvisation, exploring various class exercises involving imagery, text, as well as aural information, allowing students to explore the creative process.   • DANC203 CL Inter Ballet

  • MCOM101 CL Foundations of Public Speaking

Development of desirable habits for normal speech situations; effective use of voice, oral language, and bodily actions; basic principles of speech composition, specifically in the areas of informative, descriptive, and persuasion.     (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Fundamentals of Theatrical and Comedic Improvisation. Students will develop communication skills, audition skills, and overall performance awareness, performing in teams on a regular basis using increasingly complicated forms and culminating in a Harold, the keystone of long-form improvisation.   • THEA130 CL Script Analysis

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Students will read, analyze, discuss, and present concepts for up to 10 important theatre scripts over the course of the semester, with the intention of studying plays as a director would prior to conducting auditions. Each semester may focus on different offerings of theatre (Pulitzer Winners, Theatre for Social Change, 20th Century, etc.). Possible viewing and critique of both LSMSA and NSU performances.   • THEA203 CL Acting II

    (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Further exploration of the craft of acting through a focus on Stanislavski and Meisner methods. Through improvisation and scene study, actors will utilize moment work and critique to further their use of objectives, actions, and motivation as they construct fully developed characters.
