Each inductee received a membership certificate from the National Chapter during the ceremony, and a commemorative candle that they lit in the "mother candle" held by the President of the LSMSA Chapter when they received their membership certificate.

The Spanish Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953 for the students of North American secondary schools, and the LSMSA Chapter was established in 2011 by the sponsor and Senior Lecturer of Spanish at the Louisiana School, Dr. Maria Sanchez.

Membership is by invitation only to students who have completed at least two semesters of the Spanish Language with an average of at least 90% in the language at the end of each semester, meet other general LSMSA academic requirements, and have a clean disciplinary record in the school. These are the same requirements needed to maintain membership in the Society. Members have to be enrolled in a Spanish class throughout their years at LSMSA.

Members of the Society participate in language competitions, rallies, and contests to get scholarships for travel to Hispanic countries.

Senior members of the Society are: President Landry Tucker (’22) of Ruston, Treasurer Samantha Dugan (’23) of Mandeville, Secretary Travis Elmore (’22) of Slidell, Jaime Perdue (’23) of Kingwood, TX, and Lu Roldan (’22) of Spring, TX.

Students at LSMSA can learn a wide range of languages from French, Spanish and Latin to Chinese, Arabic, and German. For a look at the school’s language offerings, visit www.LSMSA.edu/languages.
