Athletes receive awards at LSMSA’s annual Athletic Banquet

Coordinator of Athletics and Recreation Coach Dale Clingerman led the event which recognized players in all of LSMSA’s sports teams, as well as SLAMT participants and Athletics Department supporters.

Guest speaker Alex Robertson spoke to students via Zoom about his journey to, through, and beyond the Louisiana School. Alex is a 3rd year medical student at Meharry Medical College. He graduated from LSU in 2018 with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Business Administration.  

 

He is from Baton Rouge and is a 2014 alum of LSMSA. He has worked three summers with EXCEL and currently serves as a member of the IDEA Council. 

            

While Alex’s parents convinced him to attend the Louisiana School, he was hooked from his first day of orientation where he picked up his love of basketball. 

 

His biggest message to the students was not to underestimate or undervalue themselves and to have confidence in who they are.

            

In closing, Alex shared a quote used in the movie Coach Carter. The quote reads, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

 

This quote is originally from the book A return to love: Reflections on the principles of a course in miracles by Marianne Williamson.

 

Other award presentations were also given by Caddo RA Coach Annabelle Parker,  Caddo SLA Coach Emily Duet, Associate Lecturer of Mathematics Randy Key,  Assistant Director of Enrollment Services Michael Sumner, Lecturer of Biology Dr. Jason Anderson and Associate Lecturer of Chemistry Dr. Christina Hillesheim, whom all served as coaches for various LSMSA teams.

 

Coach Dale presented everyone with an athletics banner, which all the students took turns signing for one another. Students then presented the coaches with giant sized “thank you” cards.
