LSMSA senior Maggie Wheat wins highest award at piano solo event

LSMSA senior Maggie Wheat performed in the piano solo event of the National Federation of Music Clubs at Northwestern State University on March 6.  She received her 12th consecutive superior rating and as a result won her fourth gold cup, the event's highest award.
The National Federation of Music Clubs holds an annual event for students from 1st through 12th grade to perform for ratings in their local districts.  Students perform two solo pieces by memory each year, one from a required list and one a choice of the student.

Maggie's program this year was Etude in C-sharp Minor by Alexander Dorn and Rhapsodie en Rouge by Randall Hartsell. Maggie began performing in this event as a first grader and has entered every year through her senior year.  She was a student of Donna Rose of Natchitoches before attending LSMSA.  She has been awarded superior ratings every year in the event for 12 years, demonstrating continued and consistent excellence in her work.  The event awards a gold cup for every three superior ratings.

Maggie has taken private piano lessons with Dr. Charles Jones for the entire time she has attended LSMSA.  Piano lessons at LSMSA are taken as a course for credit and a grade.  During the time of Covid, lessons have been mostly online using Zoom.

“This year I competed in Moderately Difficult Level II,” said Maggie. “I have learned a lot from taking Minor in piano under Dr. Jones at LSMSA. I really enjoy piano because it's a hobby outside academics or sports that helps relieve stress for me.”
