LSMSA to Hold End-of-School-Year Ceremonies Late July, Early August
The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts has revised its traditional Commencement, Senior Recognition, and Junior Ring Ceremonies to comply with state and federal health guidelines, current scientific information, the institution’s priorities and capabilities, stakeholder opinions and interests, and venue regulations.
COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Members of LSMSA’s Class of 2020 will have the option to formally graduate at Commencement on Sunday, August 9 at 10 a.m. in Northwestern State’s Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, and Senior Matriculations will be celebrated when graduates receive their diplomas. Commencement attendance is not required, and anyone whose health may be vulnerable is encouraged to stay home. The event will be livestreamed. To comply with social distancing guidelines, each graduate has the option to receive four tickets for guests, and rising juniors and seniors have the option to receive two tickets -- one for themselves and one for a driver/guardian if needed. Tickets will be reserved and distributed through Eventbrite beginning Tuesday, July 14, at 8 a.m. Should further
restrictions be enforced, seniors and their families will be given attendance/seating priority. Graduates who are not able to attend will receive graduation regalia and diplomas by mail following the ceremony.
SENIOR RECOGNITION CEREMONY
Due to Phase 2 restrictions and limits on gatherings, LSMSA will hold a virtual Senior Recognition Ceremony for the Class of 2020 on Friday, July 31, at 7 p.m. The school will work with students who have speaking and singing roles in the ceremony to record their parts for compilation. Details about access to the livestreamed ceremony will follow.
JUNIOR RING CEREMONY
The Class of 2021’s formal Junior Ring Ceremony will be postponed until after the state is able to lift Phase 2 restrictions on gatherings. The school is working with Balfour to mail rings for students to begin wearing.
“Our first priority is to protect the LSMSA community during COVID-19 disruptions, so limiting our longstanding traditions is a painful decision,” said Dr. Steve Horton, LSMSA Executive Director. “This year has been so difficult and we wish we could all be together on campus for these traditions, but we could not be prouder of how quickly our students adapted and how professionally our faculty and staff shifted gears to continue meeting LSMSA’s standards of excellence.”
