Students compete at Louisiana Regional Science Bowl

Receive a record of 5-0 in round-robin, 2nd overall
In early March, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) hosted the Louisiana Regional Science Bowl at the University of New Orleans.

By participating in Science Bowl competitions, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

Students are quizzed from all areas of science: Biology (Botany, Genetics, Microbiology), Chemistry (including Organic), Physics (Classical, Quantum, and Astronomy) along with Mathematics and current events in science.

Similar to a sporting event, the competition is set up in a round-robin format in the morning, during which all teams will compete, followed by a double-elimination final tournament in the afternoon.

From across Louisiana and Mississippi, 11 teams from nine schools participated. LSMSA completed its round-robin with a record of 5-0. In double elimination rounds, LSMSA lost its first match, but came roaring back and made it to the final round. In an extremely competitive, low scoring match, LSMSA came up 2 points short at the buzzer and thus earned 2nd place.

Students on the team were, on bottom row, left to right: Jacqueline Schlamp, Dior Gross (captain), and Dana Ward (spirit leader). Second row, left to right: Cera Aex, Dr. Christina Hillesheim (co-coach), Andre Bourque, and Dr. Chris Hynes (coach). These students represented our school very well and we are very proud of their teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, and performing under pressure.

"We wish to thank the LSMSA Foundation for their travel support which without, it would
have made our trip to the Louisiana Science Bowl competition extremely difficult to achieve," said Dr. Hynes. "We wish to thank all the faculty at LSMSA for teaching the team so much and how to perform gracefully at such a high academic level and stress."

The SPR has been hosting the Louisiana Regional for 27 years. The Louisiana Regional Science Bowl at UNO is part of the National Science Bowl competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
