Student volunteers raise money for LSMSA at annual Phonathon

Student and alumni volunteers raised more than $75,000 to support all areas of LSMSA during the annual Phonathon.
The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) Foundation held its annual Phonathon event Feb. 10 through 13, with student and alumni volunteers raising more than $75,000 to support all areas of the school’s unique living/learning community. Each year, student, alumni and staff volunteers dedicate four evenings to call school supporters, asking them to financially contribute to LSMSA’s work in fostering high-achieving students’ lifelong growth.

“The money raised for our Annual Fund during Phonathon helps the Foundation meet the school's needs as they change from year to year,” said LSMSA Foundation Executive Director Angela Robinson Couvillion.

In the past year, money donated to the Foundation’s Annual Fund has upgraded the school’s science labs with materials including a 3D skeleton; provided supplemental resources for language classes; paid registration fees for students to participate in national math exams; and provided production support for the school’s extensive theatre and dance programs.

Students cite a variety reasons for choosing to participate in Phonathon, including wanting to thank those who donate to the school, connecting with alumni, and improving interpersonal skills.

“I feel a responsibility to help my school as much as I can,” said John Guillory (’20). “I’ve benefitted from donor support, and I would like to help others experience that, too.”

“I was excited to hear personal stories from former LSMSA students who are in career fields I’m interested in,” said Sneha Anthony (’21). “It was neat to be able to relate to them on that level, and I took a lot of their advice to heart.”

“Phonathon is a fun way to bring the LSMSA experience full circle for donors and students while helping us support the school,” said Couvillion. “The gifts made during that week speak volumes about the LSMSA community’s commitment to making sure our students, faculty, and staff have resources necessary to thrive.”
