Students perform strongly at LSU High School Math Contest

Overall, the group won two first place awards and two third place awards at the annual competition.
On Saturday, March 16, twelve students from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) participated in the Louisiana State University (LSU) High School Mathematics Contest in Baton Rouge and came out strong in the competitions.

Students had the option to participate in individual and group tests during the contest. They competed for prizes including a $500 LSU scholarship, trophies, gift cards and monetary prizes.

Nine of the twelve students from LSMSA competed in the Open Division bracket for a chance to win the scholarship. Of the nine, one student, Andre Bourque (’20) received first place, making him the winner of a scholarship award.

"I am so proud of Andre," said associate Lecturer of Mathematics Randy Key, who co-chaperoned the trip alongside Instructor of Mathematics Dr. Oleseni Fadipe. "Besides his first place finish in the Open category, he led the team in the afternoon and helped organize the whole trip.  Exceptional work by an exceptional young man."

Three sophomores, Greg Allen, Connor Breaux and Parker Mclemore, were eligible to compete in the Geometry/Algebra session. Of those that competed, Mclemore and Breaux won first and third place, respectively.

"Parker and Connor are both 'out of the box' thinkers," said Key. "For nearly a year, they have asked, "Why?" in their Math classes.  The challenge problems the students faced during the contest really reward that style of thinking."

LSMSA received third place in the team competition. Joining Bourque, McLemore, Breaux and Allen, on team were Karan Baker (‘20), John Luke Heying (’20), Allison Johnson (’21), Brandon Logan (’19), Vani Pandian (’21) and Jacob Reeves (’20).

Other participating students were Samuel Konur (’20) and Kyle McCleary (’20). All LSMSA students received recognition for acquiring “meritorious achievement” on individual tests.

"I am so proud of all the LSMSA competitors," said Key.
