Winners of 2018 LSMSA Science Fair announced

Awards were distributed in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) held its annual Science Fair in the school’s gymnasium.

“Our Science Fair tradition reflects the vision of our Science faculty to promote and mentor student research opportunities,” said Kristi Pope Key, LSMSA’s director of academic services. “When our students take place in this annual event, they demonstrate their academic curiosity and their critical thinking skills.”

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors participated in this school-wide event, competing in several scientific disciplines. Awards were distributed in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology. Students presented individually or as a group and were judged on a list of several competing criteria.

First, second, and third place in Biology were awarded to the following sophomore group projects. Johnathan Zarraga of Houma, August Green of Geismar, and Annie Bates of Port Allen received first place for their project titled “Respiration Arthropoda.” Jayden Gray of Slidell and Trent Fischer of Livingston took second place with their presentation “Tracheal Respiration.” Third place was awarded to the project “Cellular Respiration in Wasps,” presented by Alyssa Hooper of Many, Angela Komsuprom of Leesville, Remi Thornihill of Covington, and Madison Lee of Plattenville.

In Chemistry, juniors Kathryn Lee of Natchitoches and Emery Haynes of Prairieville received first place for their presentation “TLC of Analgesics.” Second place was awarded to sophomore Emma Doucet of Torbert for her project “Pill Coating Dissolutions in Various Areas of the Gastrointestinal Tract.” Sophomore Vani Pandian of Mandeville and junior Alina Chaisson tied for third place with their projects “Traffic Congestion and Metal Pollution” and “Ionic Baby Pee,” respectively.

A three-way tie for first place was awarded in Physics. The winners of this category were: senior Ian Crochet of New Iberia for his project titled “Water Balloon Liftoff”; senior Donavan Dowden of Shreveport for his project titled “The Effect of PSI on the Performance of a Compressed Air Engine”; and junior Kyle McCleary of Baton Rouge for his project titled “Antenna Tuning.”

In Zoology, senior Luke Boston of Covington won first place with his project “Animal Collection.”

The winning projects are eligible for the regional science fair competition hosted in the spring.
