LSMSA hosts first Exploration Day of the school year

Cold weather didn't stop 93 students and their families from seeing what the school is all about!
On Monday, Nov. 12, 93 prospective students and their families braved the cold to visit the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) for the school’s first Exploration Day of the year.

“We're really excited that we had so many students on campus from more than half of the parishes in the state,” said Michael Sumner, LSMSA’s coordinator of enrollment affairs. “I'm even more excited from the conversations I had with them throughout the day. Every student and parent seemed to be enjoying their day, and they eagerly shared what they had enjoyed the most from the classes they sat in on.”

During the day, students and their families visited class sessions, engaged with current students and student ambassadors, met with instructors, and participated in science and art demonstrations. All visitors received a tour of the main high school building, as well as the Center for Science and Technology, the Music and Art Building, and residential halls.

“We are so fortunate to be able to share this unique opportunity with students from throughout the state who are seeking a more challenging high school experience,” said Emily Shumate, Director of Enrollment and Student Services. “We love getting to speak with prospective students and their families about all that LSMSA has to offer.”

Ranked within the Top 1% of America’s Best Public High Schools, LSMSA is the only state-funded residential high school for high-achieving and highly motivated sophomores, juniors and seniors. There is no tuition to attend and only a nominal room and board fee. Financial assistance can be offered to those who qualify. Students from public, private and parochial schools, as well as those who are home-schooled, are encouraged to apply.

Students attending LSMSA receive a college-level curriculum provided by a top-notch faculty, ranked third best among public high schools in the nation. More than 64 percent of the school’s faculty have earned the highest degree in their field. Class offerings are robust and include everything from core STEM classes to a variety of interest courses including dance, Chinese, astronomy, zoology, architecture, web design and coding, specialized music classes, and much more.

LSMSA has articulation agreements with all schools in the University of Louisiana system, which award up to 74 hours of college credit for LSMSA courses. The scope of the courses and the number of semester hours of credit vary from institution to institution.
