Two seniors participate in NCSSM research symposium

Juliet Flanagan and Casey Tonnies intern at Duke University.
Seniors Juliet Flanagan, of Pearl River, Louisiana, and Casey Tonnies, of Bossier City, participated in the 2018 Summer Research Internship program offered by LSMSA's sister school, the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics (NCSSM).

Micah Luftig, a 1994 graduate of LSMSA, mentored Flanagan at the Duke Center for Virology where Luftig serves as the Director. He also serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbology and is an Associate Professor of Medicine and of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.

Tonnies interned in a biomedical engineering lab also at Duke University.

"Both gave excellent final presentations," said Luftig. "The peers and staff at NCSSM were very clearly impacted by their involvement in the program."

The goal of the research internship program is to engage students in a real-world learning experience to further develop knowledge in a field of study and to get the opportunity to be hands-on as they progress on their projects.

"I'm really pleased to see this collaboration between LSMSA and NCSSM thriving," said Luftig.

Travel and lodging for this research opportunity was supported by the LSMSA Foundation. To learn more about the LSMSA Foundation or to make a contribution, visit www.LSMSA.edu/Foundation.
