Five students learn about Creole culture

Group visits three historic sites during Special Projects Week
Five students from LSMSA learned more about Creoles and their culture when they participated in “Creole Culture in Louisiana” during Special Projects Week held Jan. 8-11. Offered by Nathalie Maltie, instructor of French at LSMSA, the aim of the project was to explore the peculiar ethnic composition and history of the Creole community of Cane River. Students learned who the Creoles were and what it meant to be Creole. They also attempted to define a Creole from historical and contemporary points of view through visits to various sites of interest in the Cane River area. The group visited Fort St. Jean Baptiste, St. Augustine Church and Los Adaes. The five students were Kay Creel, a sophomore from Shreveport; Alvaro Carvajal, a senior from Jefferson; Derek Dupre, a sophomore from Houma; Makayla Harrell, a sophomore from Boyce; and Zachary Schleter, a junior from Lake Charles.
