Katie Summerell, M.A., PLPC joins the ranks of LSMSA in the College Counseling Center

LSMSA is thrilled to welcome the newest Academic Services team member, Katie Summerell, M.A., PLPC. An experienced counselor, Summerell brings a wealth of knowledge to pass on to our students in the College Counseling Center.

Ms. Summerell spent the past six years as an instructor and advisor in the Psychology Department at Northwestern State University (NSU). In addition, she has worked as a mental health therapist in both the public and private sectors and has over thirteen years of mental health therapy experience.

Originally from Hornbeck, Louisiana, she moved to Natchitoches in 2007 to attend NSU, where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Counseling Psychology.

“My favorite thing about mental health therapy and teaching psychology is watching students ‘connect the dots’,” said Summerell. “As their College Counselor, I am excited about helping students navigate into the next phase of their lives.”

Ms. Summerell has developed and taught various programs and seminars focused on topics including social media awareness, life skills, and distracted driving, primarily to groups ages 12 to 17 and for agencies throughout central Louisiana.

She loves dogs, especially her new puppy Franco, and enjoys watching college sports, particularly football and baseball, rarely missing a chance to watch a game.

"The College Counseling Center serves as such a vital aspect of the LSMSA academic experience. What Katie Summerell brings to this role is years of highly valued personal counseling work alongside substantive experience of teaching and advising in higher education,” said Director of Academic Services Dr. Kristi Pope Key. “Her professional skills and her vision for the position align perfectly with the mission of the CCC, and we're thrilled to have her join this team."
