Students visit campus for Exploration Day

Prospective students learn more about LSMSA
Approximately 100 prospective students and their families visited LSMSA on Monday, Jan. 16, for Exploration Day.

Exploration Day is held twice yearly and designed to give an overview of the academic, social and residential life programs that LSMSA offers.
Prospective students were welcomed to campus by members of the Office of Enrollment Services, faculty and staff, administration and student ambassadors.

“Exploration Day was a huge success,” said John Birch, director of enrollment services. “Thank you to faculty and staff for participating in the day by sharing classrooms, creating an inclusive environment, assisting with tours, facilitating a middle school session and educating guests about the many opportunities that LSMSA affords them.”

High school students toured the academic campus, observed two classes and participated in a departmental fair. Middle school students learned about summer camp opportunities offered by LSMSA, toured campus and enjoyed demonstrations by faculty members. Parents met Emily Shumate, director of student services, Dr. Kristi Pope Key, director of academic services, and John Allen, director of finance and operations. They attended the departmental fair and toured the academic campus.

LSMSA is the only state-funded residential high school for high achieving and highly motivated sophomores, juniors and seniors. Each year students from all across the state seek admission. Students from public, private and parochial schools, as well as those who are home schooled, are encouraged to apply. Admission is highly competitive. The school offers college level classes in a disciplined, nurturing environment. Students are exposed to rich opportunities through an extensive curriculum in all subject areas.

Named a Blue Ribbon High School by the U.S. Department of Education, LSMSA has articulation agreements with all schools in the University of Louisiana system, which award up to 74 hours of college credit for LSMSA courses. The scope of the courses and the number of semester hours of credit vary from institution to institution.

Articulation agreements are above and beyond the typical dual enrollment program, but LSMSA students also have access to more than 30 dual enrollment courses through a local university. These courses are part of the regular LSMSA curriculum and taught by LSMSA faculty. Additionally, LSMSA students are highly recruited by colleges all over the country.
