Department of Science hosts annual Science Fair

Students compete in five categories
Almost 100 students at LSMSA participated in the annual Science Fair sponsored by the Department of Science and held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in the school gym.

Awards were presented in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and zoology.

“The Science Fair introduces students to the process and fun of science research and allows them to participate in a science competition,” said Dr. Maggie Hodge, chair of the department.

First place in biology went to Lily Orgeron, Destiny Beal, Lauren Aguillard and Alyssa Bosworth. Their project was “Lima Bean Germination Period Effect on Cellular Respiration.” Second place went to Collin Serigne, Emily Cormier, Daniel Metzger, Nihal Gopalam and Kailin LeBlanc. Their project was “Temperature Effect on Photosynthesis in Pansy Leaves.” Grace Fields and Cydnie Andrepont placed third. Their project was “How Different Concentrations of Catalase Affects Enzyme Activity.

Michael Bass won first place in chemistry. His project was “Determination of Glucose in Candy.” Second place went to Ariana Yelverton and Gabbi Blanchard. Their project was “Power Fruits and Vegetables.” Third place went to Chris Tonnies and Sebastian Guerrero. Their project was “Heat under Pressure.” Lyrren Mwaghore and Rachel Judson tied for fourth. Their project was “Fabric to Dye for.” Kiara Barclay and KC Saxon tied for fourth. Their project was “Electrolytes in Your Drink.”

Elizabeth Long placed first in organic chemistry. Her project was “Simulation of the Uptake of Different Brands of Aspirin in the Stomach.”

Jojo Deep won first place in physics. His project was “Splash Theory.” Second place went to Carolin Jin, Michael Mayeux and Abby Pace. Their project was “Atwood’s Machine.”

Haley Kastner and Marcus Shallow tied for first place in zoology.

Each of the winners is now eligible to compete in the regional science fair to be held in the spring.
