I am serving as Communications Director for the Association of Oncology Social Work for a term extending 2010-2012. AOSW is a professional organization with a vision of a global society in which oncology care meets the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of all people affected by cancer. AOSW involves over 1,200 members in sixteen countries. The Communications Director position includes oversight of four listserv lists for internal communication; the organization's newsletter and website; and AOSW's emerging presence with social media for networking, public education, and fundraising. Communications Director is a volunteer position on AOSW's Board of Directors. I am continuing my full-time work as oncology social worker at LSUHSC-Shreveport, covering the inpatient oncology areas and the Blood & Marrow Transplant Clinic. I am fortunate that LSUHSC-S is supportive of pro bono involvement in professional organizations and that they appreciate my service to AOSW as part of advancing the field of oncology care.

I believe that LSMSA's "living/learning environment" was a significant influence in my ability to comfortably interact with a wide variety of personalities among my patients and my professional colleagues. Learning to live harmoniously with suitemates is good preparation for leading a group of professionals passionate about our work. I also want to thank Dr. Karen Cole and Dr. Rodney Allen for constructive criticism on all of those English essays. Written communication skills are an essential part of my career and have been key in my professional development.
