Follow Alumnus Experience in Afghanistan

After graduating from West Point in June 2002, Matt Mabe (LSMSA c/o ’98) went on to serve five years in the Army as a combat engineer officer. During that time, he was deployed to Iraq twice – first as a platoon leader in the 2003 invasion and later as a company executive officer in Ramadi in 2006. In May 2007, Captain Mabe chose to leave the military to pursue a career in journalism, graduating a year later with a Masters degree in journalism from Columbia University. He subsequently interned at The New York Times, BusinessWeek and The Moscow Times.

But this February, while working as a reporter at The Star-Ledger newspaper in Newark, NJ, Mabe was involuntarily recalled to active duty to serve another combat tour, this time in Afghanistan. Despite having to put his budding journalism career on hold, Mabe is determined to make the most of this latest call to duty by continuing to write about the experience. At a time when Americans are growing weary of the deteriorating situation in the eight-year conflict, Mabe – along with his girlfriend, Molly – has chosen to blog about the personal sacrifices involved in heading back to war.  Their blog can be found at Here and Far.

An excellent introduction to Captain Mabe's blog can be found in Foreign Policy, the Columbia Journalism Review, and First Things

"Thank you" seems insufficient for this level of service to our nation and for the cause of peace, and we join with those in thoughts and prayers for a speedy and safe return from this current tour of duty.
