Science Department
The Science Department seeks to educate and inspire all students in an energized science environment that recognizes individual student needs and interests while teaching a college-level curriculum. LSMSA provides all of its students with access to modern laboratories that underwent a recent $800,000 renovation and equipment acquisition. These are important tools that the Science Department uses to help students achieve. In Biology students are able to use an extensive modern and fossil specimen collection, a microscope video camera, and a state-of-the-art microbiology lab. The school was just notified by Lowe's that they won money to fund a greenhouse to be used by biology and botany students.  In Chemistry weekly labs or individual research is aided by a Gas Chromatograph, an Electrochemical Analyzer (on loan from NASA), and/or Visible Spectrophotometers. In Physics students have access to two labs equipped with PASCO Science Workshop 750 computer interfaces with computers, printers, and associated detectors, and we have recently added Astronomy equipment including binoculars and telescopes that allow students to experiment with Astro-photography.  Students also have access to a research grade telescope.

At LSMSA, students can take exciting electives like: Genetics, Vertebrate Zoology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymers, Astrophysics, Modern Physics, Astrobiology, and Astronomy. In addition to the Future Scientist Program, which is explained further on this site, the Science Department assists students interested in a particular scientific field by suggesting courses that best fit with the students' college goals. Course offerings are presented through three main college/career paths: Medicine; Research or Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; and Physics Research or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
