Annual Math Competition

LSMSA will hold its annual mathematics competition on Tuesday, April 20th.  All activities will take place in LSMSA's classrooms, gymnasium, auditorium, and 0ur new Center for Performance and Technology.. 

The contest will consist of individual and team competitions.  Eligible students should be in the ninth grade or below and may not be enrolled in or have already taken Algebra II or any higher mathematics course.  Each school may bring a maximum of 12 students.

The exercises on each contest will come from Algebra, Geometry, and other areas of mathematics, and not from any specific curriculum.  The questions will be designed to challenge students to draw from their knowledge of mathematics, to think, to synthesize concepts, and to solve problems. 

Teams should be registered prior to April 1st.

Please send the $50.00 registration fee with the check made payable to The Louisiana School.

Directions to LSMSA are on the homepage of the website.  Bus parking will be at NSU's Prather Coliseum.  Car and van parking will be available at the NSU Library.

The schedule for the day is:
9-10 a.m.   REGISTRATION
10-11:15 a.m.  INDIVIDUAL TESTS

While the students take the individual tests, teachers are invited to a workshop entitled "Instructional Strategies for the Math Classroom."  It will be taught by Jennifer Mangum, LSMSA math instructor for the last 11 years.  Mrs. Mangum will briefly share several instructional strategies developed over her teaching career that have contributed to increased student success in math.  Strategies will include the use of Math Type Software, TI Smartview Emulator, Graphing software, Electronic notes, and writing prompts. 

11:15-1:00 p.m.  LUNCH will be served in LSMSA's new cafeteria and is included in your registration fee for your group.  (Grading is done during this time)
1:00 -2:30 p.m.  TEAM COMPETITION
2:30 - 3:00 p.m.  LSMSA PRESENTATION, PRIZE DRAWINGS, & AWARDS CEREMONY
